Bourtange and its surroundings
Landal Landgoed Bourtange lies close to Bourtange, a unique fortified town with a turbulent history. The design of the moats and walls proved the safest way to protect Bourtange. Nearby lies the star-shaped fortress dating from 1742, which has recently been fully restored.
The region has several art and cultural festivals to its name. Every year, the second weekend in July is dedicated to the 'Montmartre' art market in Sellingen. Spend late summer and autumn in Bourtange at the annual autumn fair in the fortress on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September. Stalls are set up on the Market Square, Brouwhuis Square and around the ramparts. From 29 November to 25 December, the picturesque, fortified town hosts a Christmas market every weekend. Towns such as Emmen (32 km) with Wildlands and Thermen Bad Nieuwe Schans (40 km), and delightful villages just across the border in Germany, are quickly and easily accessible. Groningen (66 km) lies within an hour's drive.
